Dr Lea Shanley

Dr Lea Shanley is a Research Fellow at Nelson Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research interests focus on the intersection of technology, policy and law. Previously, Dr Shanley was the founding co-Executive Director of the National Science Foundation’s South Big Data Innovation Hub. Dr Shanley also served as a Presidential Innovation Fellow under the Obama Administration, working with the White House and NASA to design and guide open science and innovation research strategies for Earth and planetary science, and as the founding director of the Wilson Center’s Commons Lab, leading research in crowdsourcing, social media, and big data. Shanley holds a PhD in geographic information science and satellite remote sensing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Shanley serves on the Board of Directors for the non-profit Public Invention, and on the advisory boards of the European Union’s Big Data Value Association, NASA’s Consortium for the Valuation of Applications Benefits Linked with Earth Science, and NASA’s Socioeconomic Data and Applications Data Center.
