The DataBench project addresses a significant gap in the current benchmarking community’s activities, by providing certifiable benchmarks and evaluation schemes of Big Data technologies performance of high business impact and industrial significance. DataBench is fostering the adoption of a common benchmarking toolset to help big data practitioners and BDV cPPP projects to assess their technical KPIs and business metrics.
DataBench aims to enable search and recommendation capabilities to ease the process of finding the right benchmarking tool or approach. On the other hand, DataBench will provide an integration layer to ease the process of deploying and configuring some selected benchmarking tools, as well as collecting the results of the execution of the benchmarks done by those tools in a common Toolbox. This data collection will allow the derivation of a set of homogenized technical metrics and the potential derivation of business insights as extra features not currently available in single benchmarking tools. Information about the DataBench Toolbox can be downloaded in this whitepaper.
During 2018 DataBench has delivered the core specs of the framework to be developed in the coming months. This includes not only technical but also business studies and polls among different stakeholders to assess the industrial significance of benchmarking Big Data.
In addition, the project was very active with dissemination activities, through the participation at multiple events such as KDD London, itAIS 2018, EBDVF2018, ICT 2018, among others, where it was possible to share the objectives of the project with external stakeholders. Furthermore, the project also presented its work around benchmarking Big Data in the BDVe series of webinars.
For the first semester of 2019, the consortium is working towards the project’s participation at industry events and the development of a Benchmarking Community with key stakeholders. The first version of the Toolbox, one of the main outcomes of the project, is expected to be launched by June 2019.

At the heart of DataBench is the goal to design a benchmarking process helping European organizations developing Big Data Technologies to reach for excellence and constantly improve their performance, by measuring their technology development activity against parameters of high business relevance.
DataBench will investigate existing Big Data benchmarking tools and projects, identify the main gaps and provide a robust set of metrics to compare technical results coming from those tools.
